ITV Chart Show - Rock Chart (23rd November 1991)
This has to be my all time favourite chart. Not only because of the diversity of industrial rock, grunge and hard rock, but the quality of the music was pretty good.
When I first saw this chart, I was surprised why Nirvana was in the Rock Chart. Nirvana were previously in the indie charts in 1989 and 1991 and were considered an alternative band. Even bands such as Nine Inch Nails were also considered as alternative. I was also surprised when N.I.N first appeared in the rock chart in the summer of 1991.
1991 was the year when Jane's Addiction, Nine Inch Nails and finally Nirvana started to puncture the Rock Chart with their alternative sounds. Previously the Rock Charts were dominated by glam metal music. Suddenly their domination was being at risked and ultimately in a few years time, they started to fade away.
When I first heard Nirvana's Smells Like Teen Spirit, I really didn't feel it was that great compared to an earlier song released in january 1991 called "sliver". That song in my opinion at that time was million times better than smells like. After a few plays, I started to like Smells Like Teen Spirit and ultimately bought their Nevermind album, which to me is still one of the greatest albums ever made.
It shows you that classics are not meant to be like for the first time !!!
