ITV Chart Show - Indie Chart (21st December 1991)
As always near Christmas, there is a slump in record sales, especially for this indie chart, where there wasn't many artists who had videos. The Top 3 consisted of acts that didn't have videos, although Daisy Chainsaw later had a video for "Love Your Money".
Curve's singer Toni Halliday was the pin-up girl in many indie teenagers bedrooms, but apart from the glamour, there was also the horror. Dr Phibes was not also a 1971 horror film with Vincent Price, but a psychedelic rock group, whose singer was compared to Jimi Hendrix, in the sense of him being black and able to play guitar in a free form style.
Although the band appeared in the Glastonbury festival in 1992, they never really achieved success, maybe because grunge was becoming popular and people were listening to that. However according to the Sunday Mirror in 1997, the horror unfolded, when Howard King Jr, the lead singer of Dr Phibes, was guilty in court for murdering his mother. A tragic end for the band, but a double tragedy for the relatives of the singer, including his deceased mother !!!
The murder was never really reported in the national press, but only in the local press. Apart from wikipedia, there hasn't been any independent source confirming the story. I just hope it isn't someone playing a sick joke, by editing Wikipedia to suggest that the ex-singer murdered his mother. If the murder is true, its even more terrible !!!!
