The Chart Show - Indie Chart (17th July 1987)

In the early 90's, Madchester were ruling the nests, but in the 80's, it was goth music that was lingering in the indies. There were many goth acts as noticed in this chart - James Ray, Fields of the Nephilim and All About Eve. But out of those goth acts, the one that really stood out for me, was of course, All About Eve. Not many people liked them, but I was always fond of female vocals in a goth record. It made it more haunting and appealing, just like The Cranes did in the 90's.

When I first saw this chart, I immediately fell in love with All About Eve's Flowers in our Hair, it was one of those tracks that you fall for straight away. It had the reminiscence of early U2 and the haunting vocals from Julianne Regan. All About Eve did nationally well in the charts, but I was always fond of their early indie goth sounds, that competed against the likes of The Mission and Sisters of Mercy.

Apart from goth, there was also the first in roads of industrial music appearing in the indie scene. Big Black was one of them, although in this chart, they didn't have a video. Big Black's main founder was Steve Albini, who later on became a successful music producer for The Pixies, Nirvana, PJ Harvey, Bush and many others. I found Big Black's music very noisy as expected, but for some reason, their music never really made me move any parts of my body. I just found their music just a bunch of screaming and disorganised guitars, which wasn't going anywhere. So it was obvious, I wasn't a fan of theirs. I guess their music isn't really going to be everybody's cups of tea, but at least in this chart, I discovered music that wasn't going to be played elsewhere.
